Ah my favorite time of the year!! Doing my annual Federal income tax and seeing how much $$ I have to give to Uncle Sam this year. Because heaven knows the country will shut down if they don’t get my fair share. And then almost as bad is how much good old NYS will take from me?
Since I live in Buffalo (by some accounts the 3rd poorest city in the nation) shouldn’t I get a tax discount? Yeah I know nice dreaming right?
Which leads me to something that makes me grumble every year: the TV ads for tax help. Is it me or do they get worse every year? Local ads for most products and services is lame in most cities but it seems that we might be ranked if there were rankings being kept.
We have the usual ads for the traditional tax preparers like H&R Block who promise to get you the highest rebate possible. And they will find all the deductions you qualify for all of which they will do for free, though there will be a fee charged for your state returns. That’s impressive till one realizes that you can do the same thing with Turbo Tax for free on line. And I don’t have to go to their office. I can stay home and prepare my taxes in my underwear if I choose to. I don’t mind you, but you get the idea.
Then you have the lawyers and former IRS agents that can negotiate a lower amount if you are into Uncle Sam for big bucks like say 50 grand or more. Of course this is only for low lifes like professional people who don’t have time to get their taxes done. You know the types, former athletes, actors (remember Wesley Snipes) and others that you would assume have accountants to take care of this type of business. Maybe I just won’t bother to pay taxes for say 5 or 10 years and then go to one of these guys to negotiate pennies on the dollar for what I really owe. I can say I’ve been too busy to pay, don’t you agree?
All of this leads me to the worst running ad in Buffalo for tax preparations, EG Tax. I’m sure they are fine accountants and tax preparers as advertised. But is anyone really go to go there because of the tax fairy? What did they promise that guy to dress up in a pink tutu with a cigar and t-shirt. Go to a Sabres or Bills game dressed like that and I guarantee you’re not walking home under your own power! Or the guys that’s not going out with his buddies, or turns down a dinner date, all because he has to do his taxes. That’s reality for you.
And we wonder and grumble out loud and get all upset when some hockey player from Canada, or Tom Brady, or anyone else who is not from here takes a shot at Buffalo. If they were watching these tax ads, can you blame them?
only in Buffalo….
